Elmer the Patchwork Elephant will be coming to Eastbourne in 2024 for a celebratory anniversary visit – and
bringing 11 of his Elmer friends with him.
Your Eastbourne BID is organising a trail of 12 decorated Elmer statues around the town centre for children to spot.
The herd of Elmers, inspired by the town’s status as a centre of artistic excellence and home of this year’s
Turner Prize, will be in position from February to April.
Elmer the Patchwork Elephant is a children’s picture book series by the British author David McKee. Elmer was first published by Dobson Books in 1968, and reissued with redrawn illustrations in a slightly shortened version in 1989 – making 2024 the 35th birthday of Elmer.
Forty-one different book titles have been created since 1989 and the popular series has sold more than eight million copies in 50 languages around the world.
Stephen Holt, Your Eastbourne BID CEO, said, “We are delighted to welcome Elmer to the town. “ This iconic children’s character is much-loved and is celebrating his 35th year in Eastbourne.”
“This art trail is timed perfectly with the celebration of the Turner Prize in the town, and includes 12 statues for people to find and tick off. “Each of the statues will be a take on a classic artist.
“We are also delighted that two brand new – never seen before – Elmers will be created, one inspired by Luther Gotz and
his colourful mural on the Towner, and another by Eastbourne’s international tennis competition. “Watch this space for more information, and how to play the Elmer trail!”
